The Journal of the Society includes both fully refereed papers and edited accounts of ongoing conflict research. The Journal is issued to members who pay the full membership subscription for the years in which they are published. Extra copies and back numbers can be obtained from the Society at the charge prevailing at the time. All contributions to the Transactions are copyright and applications to reproduce them whether in part or in whole should be addressed to the Editor.
The Journal of the Conflict Research Society provides a platform for members and others to report ongoing work in the field of Conflict Research. It also provides a record of the Society’s activities.
Contributions are welcome in a number of areas:
- Papers (guideline length 3000-5000 words, though exceptionally longer papers may be accepted)
- Contributions in this category will represent outputs from conflict research; they may be theoretical or practical in orientation. Full papers will be subject to a formal refereeing process.
- Reports on work in progress (guideline length 250 words)
- Contributions in this category will summarise ongoing research projects; academic and research centres are especially encouraged to provide reports of key developments at regular intervals
- Bibliographical information
- Reviews and surveys of books or similar publications on conflict research that have appeared since the last Volume
Contributions are especially welcomed that represent and demonstrate the distinctive focus and interests of conflict researchers in the UK and that thereby enable the Journal to reflect to a degree the contemporary scene in this country. The final decision on the inclusion or amendment of all contributions rests with the Editor.
Papers submitted for consideration for publication in the Journal must be accompanied by a statement that they have not been submitted for publication elsewhere. Previous presentation in another format, for instance as a conference contribution, may not bar acceptance and so should be disclosed.
All papers are refereed, and the Editor reserves the right to refuse any manuscript, whether on invitation or otherwise, and to make suggestions and/or modifications before publication. Manuscripts that have been accepted for publication become the property of the Society. It is a condition of acceptance that the copyright shall transfer to be vested in the Society.
Papers must be supplied in both hard-copy and electronic media. The original typescript and two good copies should be provided on A4 paper, double-spaced and with ample margins. A computer disk (CD or floppy) must also be provided on which the manuscript appears in identical form: MS Word is the preferred format.
The manuscript should include (in this order): a title page, giving the title (which should be succinct), author(s) and address for correspondence; an abstract page, giving an abstract of the paper (maximum 200 words) and a list of up to six keywords or phrases; the text of the document; the figure captions; and any figures, each being provided on a separate page in a state that is ready for publication.
The language of the Journal is English, and papers in other languages cannot be considered for publication. Papers should be written clearly and directly, and technical language must only be used where it is considered essential to the meaning of the paper. Jargon should be avoided and any abbreviations first expressed in full.
The Journal uses the Harvard system for references. That is, references in the text are indicated by the author's names and year of publication in parentheses. If a references paper has three or more authors then the rerference shoul;d always appear as the first author folowed by the words et al. All references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the manuscript. The full references must include all authors’ names and initials, the year of publication, title of paper or contribution, editors’ names (for edited collections), title of journal or edited volume (in italics), volume and issue number (of a journal), place and name of publisher (for books) and page numbers (for journal papers).
All illustrations, whether diagrams, tables or images are referred to as Figures and are numbered sequentially. They should be referred to by number in the text but provided separately at the end of the paper. Since originals of diagrams may be reduced to fit onto the printed page fine details should be avoided. Diagrams should be provided electronically unless it is technically impossible to do so.
The Editor may return unread any submissions that do not conform to these guidelines.
